Sephardic traditions

Shabbat Chatan

In the Sephardic tradition the chatan is honoured on the Shabbat after the wedding. He is escorted to the synagogue with singing, called up to the Torah with a special mi sheberach, and celebrated with piyyutim and a kiddush for the community — here, in the synagogue of Maran.

Zeved HaBat / Naming a Daughter

Name your newborn daughter in Maran's synagogue: the father is called to the Torah, a mi sheberach is said for mother and daughter, and — in the Sephardi custom of Zeved HaBat — the song "Yonati" is sung.

  • Shabbat — 08:30 · Shabbat morning prayers

Hanachat Tefillin (First Tefillin)

In many Sephardic families the bar mitzvah boy's first tefillin is a celebration of its own: on a Monday or Thursday he puts on tefillin for the first time at Shacharit, surrounded by family, song and blessings, often followed by a festive breakfast.

  • Monday & Thursday — 07:00 · Shacharit with Torah reading

₪900 ₪300 deposit to reserve

Brit Yitzchak / Zohar Night

On the night before the brit, Sephardic families gather the men of the family and friends to read the passages of the Zohar about the brit, hear words of Torah from a chacham, and share cakes and sweets. Hold it in the beit midrash of Maran.

  • Sunday–Thursday — Evening, after Maariv
  • Shabbat — Motzei Shabbat (for a Sunday brit)

₪500

Hilula

A Sephardic celebration on the yahrzeit of a tzaddik — or of a beloved parent — with candles, piyyutim, words of Torah and a seudah in his memory. Maran's own hilula falls on 13 Nisan, the day of his passing.

  • Sunday–Thursday — Evening, after Maariv
  • Shabbat — Motzei Shabbat
