A further collection of Karo’s responsa, covering every area of Jewish law. Alongside its legal value, Avkat Rochel (“the merchant’s spice-powder,” from Song of Songs 3:6) is a precious historical record: it preserves communal enactments of Tzfat and Karo’s halachic exchanges with the sages of his generation. It was printed only some two centuries after his death; most bibliographies give Salonica, 1791.
